Assistive Robotic Soft Hand 2024-25

OUR GOALS & CHALLEGES

Goals

  • Weight of product to be less than 350 grams.

  • The actuator & glove is able to be hand-washed.

  • Aesthetically pleasing design.

Project Objective

The team will develop an assistive robotic soft hand for hand-impaired patients. The soft hand pneumatic actuator will assist in tasks of holding a cup and picking up items. The soft hand will support the structure of the fingers and allows for restricted concentric and eccentric movement of the fingers. A control system will be installed with the use of an Arduino microcontroller that will pressurize the fingers to a specific PSI reading and depressurize with user input. This will allow the customer to have added strength when doing everyday tasks while also having the ability to freely move their hands without constraint.

Challenges

  • Soft actuator geometry to allow for a more concentrated inflation.

  • Implemenation of circuitry to allow user input for ease of use.

  • Material selection to allow elastomer to have an optimal flex for the project.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

01 / ERGONOMIC

With a lightweight, over the hand design, our product will allow for a minimal load on the hand to maintain comfort as it is used in various activities. It also follows a natural bend of the hand which allows for relaxiation when not in use as well as sufficeitn support whe

02 / DURABLE

Designed with strong elastomers and plastics, this device is sure to hold its strength in various condtions and enviroments. The glove as well as the fingers are able to be cleaned allowing for dirtier tasks such as potting plants.

03 / EASY

With a control board positioned above the arm, inflation of the finger-like actuators becomes simple. Allowing for minimal user input while also allowing or both relaxed and activated modes. The control board also results in less C02 waste from the cannisters.
